No Ceiling - Jewelry Auction Results Keep Rushing Up



Nearly every jewelry auction in recent months ended with a record. Most paid for a pink diamond at an auction, highest total to date, record per carat price and now, Sotheby’s just had the highest grossing sales day, $53.2 million. Each of the top ten items was sold for more than $1 million.

Alrosa Goal: Lead by Carat Output, Does Not Expect Sharp Rough Price Increases


Alrosa wants to become the undisputed diamond leader, aiming to be the largest supplier by carat in the near future. De Beers, until recently the long-time global leader, decreased production in 2008 due to the economic crisis and as a result, the company and Botswana lost their top spot to Alrosa and Russia.

Low Margins Holding Indian Diamond Production Back


Indian diamond factory output has risen, but not by as much as expected. Industry watchers note that because demand has been good, whatever rough there was in the market has been snapped up, leading to a raw material shortage. This in turn has triggered higher premiums on Sight boxes, which resulted in a rough price hike by De Beers during the last Sight.

Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Sells for $1 Million


A modified rectangular-cut fancy vivid purple-pink diamond of 6.89 carats was sold for $6,914,500 at Christie’s New York Jewels auction yesterday (Tuesday). The auction total, $22.1 million, brought Christie’s New York jewelry sales total to $131 million for the year the highest total ever for the U.S. jewelry auction market.
